How we're tackling climate change

How We’re Tackling Climate Change Through a Sustainable Food System

At Wealden Food Partnership, we’re committed to addressing climate change by transforming the way we grow, consume, and share food across our communities. Together with over 100 member organisations, we’re building a more sustainable future through local action.

Reducing Food Waste

Food waste is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Wealden Food Partnership is committed to reducing food waste through redistribution and education. By working with local businesses, food banks, and community fridges, we ensure that surplus food finds its way to those who need it, rather than contributing to landfill.

We provide education and skills development to help communities reduce food waste by teaching cooking skills and promoting the use of seasonal produce.

Supporting Sustainable Farming and Growing

Our partnership supports local farms and growing projects that prioritise sustainable and regenerative practices. By focusing on soil health, reducing chemical inputs, and using less energy-intensive methods, these farms help sequester carbon and protect biodiversity.

We promote organic and low-impact farming techniques that not only reduce emissions but also build resilience against the effects of climate change on our food system.

Encouraging Local Food Production

Local food production plays a key role in cutting down carbon emissions related to food transport. By supporting local growers, community allotments, and small-scale producers, we encourage shorter food chains, less transport, and a smaller carbon footprint.

We also advocate for local food sourcing through buyer and supplier events, farmers’ markets, farm shops, and other initiatives that connect consumers directly with local producers, reducing the need for long-distance food shipping.

Educating and Empowering Our Community

Education is vital in creating long-term change. We run workshops, seminars, and educational campaigns aimed at raising awareness of how the food system impacts climate change. From school programs to community events, we empower individuals to make climate-conscious food choices, from eating more locally grown food to reducing waste at home.

Our partnership is working on creating a more informed and engaged community, one where everyone can be part of the solution to the climate crisis.

Collaborating for Change

Wealden Food Partnership brings together over 100 organisations, including businesses, food banks, community groups, and local authorities, all working towards the same goal—creating a sustainable food system that mitigates climate change. By combining our efforts, resources, and expertise, we’re able to make a greater impact together.

Our collaborative approach allows us to share innovative solutions, pilot new projects, and scale initiatives that help reduce the environmental impact of the food system.

Join Us in Making a Difference

Climate change is a global challenge, but local action can make a huge difference. Whether you’re an individual looking to make more sustainable food choices or an organisation ready to collaborate on climate initiatives, we welcome you to join Wealden Food Partnership in building a resilient and climate-friendly food system.
